Hauntings
I recently realised that most of my blog visitors are haunted house
enthusiasts, which of course is a good thing, since I’m a horror writer and
enthusiast myself. I’m also getting a lot more traffic on this website because
of it.
So first of all, I’d like to say hi. Thanks for reading my blog. And to
say thanks, I decided to start a new page on my website, specifically for
haunted houses. Joe’s Most Haunted will take you to the thin line between reality
and fiction. Every now and ... Continue reading ...
The Haunting of the Old Presidency (Ou Presidensie)

So
what do ghosts and dead presidents have in common?
Apparently
they all stay here:

Built
in 1885, it’s no wonder the place is haunted.

It’s
been quite a while since I last went on a ghost tour or visited the regular haunted
spots around Bloemfontein, South Africa. I’ve been so busy writing and editing
lately, that I sometimes forget about my other interests. Which of course is
something we should all be watching out for.

So
last weekend, when the opportunity to visit a pla... Continue reading ...

It’s been a while
since I’ve blogged about haunted spots in Bloemfontein, South Africa, but since
there is now an increased interest among the locals and a few new spots
available, you can expect to read a lot more of my haunted experiences in the
months to come.

Today’s blog is
about two spots very close together, and their names are actually Afrikaans, so
I hope my direct English translations will suffice. The reason these two spots
are so close together is because they both stood ... Continue reading ...
Halloween 2011

Halloween 2011 will most likely go down as my most memorable yet. I’ll tell you exactly why later on.
Halloween in South Africa basically consists of watching scary movies. There are no trick-or-treating (unless a small neighbourhood decided otherwise), creepy pumpkins or any other decorations. A few shops will however try and score some money by selling a few Halloween themed goodies.
So after spending every Halloween watching a blood-smeared bucket load of horror movies, I dec... ? Continue reading ...
Memorable EMF session

Last night I accompanied two of my friends on a ghost tour with Bloemfontein’s very own ghost tours, and had quite a remarkable experience with an EMF meter. An EMF meter, which measure electro magnetic fields, is known for picking up the residual energy of ghosts.

We were at the Rambler’s Sports Club when Stephan, the tour guide, placed the meter on the stairs where a nurse is known to frequent. The unnamed nurse worked there back when it was still a field hospital during th... Continue reading ...
Naval Hill Observatory/Theatre (Sterrewag Teater)

Walk in. Close your eyes. Listen to the sounds of the old observatory turned theatre. You might be lucky enough to hear the sound of the old piano creep down the passage. Perhaps you’ll even meet one of the observatory’s many ghosts, including music lovers sticking to their seats, musicians clinging to better memories, or even the old director who died before he could see his observatory completed.

I dare you to follow me through a short history and then a step-by-step ret... ? Continue reading ...

As the oldest sports club and former military hospital in Bloemfontein (not to mention the site of a horrific fire), the Ramblers Sports Club is definitely one of Bloemfontein’s finest haunted spots.
My first impression of the building as I parked in front was one of silence, perhaps even secrets. There’s just so much history connected to the building. I could just imagine what the surrounding area looked like back then. Luckily I found a nice photo. All the old black and white photo... ? Continue reading ...
Naval Hill, Bloemfontein, South Africa

Naval Hill in Bloemfontein, South Africa is mostly known for two things:
1) That it stood as a landmark for British Cavalry during the Anglo-Boer war.
2) And that the Franklin Game Reserve, which is on top of Naval Hill, is currently the only nature reserve located in the middle of a city.

What a lot of people don’t know, except for the locals of Bloemfontein, is that Naval Hill has a very dark history.

Although lots of people visit the top of Naval Hill during the daytime... Continue reading ...

If you've missed part 1, just click here.
The excitement was audible as we packed away our leftover food and readied our cameras.
The caretaker opened the last steel gate and bid us farewell as he returned to his dark quarters, which stood just beside that eerie workshop you saw earlier.
The tour guide divided us into smaller groups of three or four, so that each group could then spend some time alone in certain areas of the prison.
The moment we walked into the men's cell... ? Continue reading ...

What better way to kick off 2011 than going on a tour through a haunted prison. Well, now that I think about it, what prison wouldn’t be haunted? All that anger and violence. And yes, death. Especially in a country with a violent history such as South Africa.
We couldn’t have asked for a better atmosphere to start off the trip – dark clouds, slight drizzle, the feeling of uncertainty that comes with not knowing where the place is you’re going to spend the night or what you're goi... ? Continue reading ...

I’m very excited to let you all know that I will not only be visiting a haunted prison on Friday the seventh of January, but also spending the night. That’s right, with a camera and a flashlight I’ll be walking the halls of the prison with a few other people and the guys from Bloemfontein Ghost Tours.
I had no idea the tour group existed until I got a friend request from them on Facebook. They offer quite a few ghost tours throughout Bloemfontein. However, this will be their first a... ? Continue reading ...

This really seems to be the month for achieving goals. Even if the goal is to spend time in a haunted mansion. At night! Click here if you've missed the first installment of my saga with the York Road Mansion.

A while back I blogged about a possible haunted mansion in York Road, which is not too far away from where I live in Bloemfontein, South Africa. Here’s a quick recap for those who missed it: I took some photos and, feeling a bit disappointed at not feeling anything sinister, made m...?? ? Continue reading ...

As most of you know I enjoy grabbing my camera and taking more than just a few photographs. I think mostly because of my bad memory. What I enjoy most of course, is taking photos of anything spooky. As I’ve said before, I am already certain ghosts exist, so whether I capture a few on camera or not, I still enjoy strolling around old houses and cemeteries to take in the atmosphere (Anything to help me experience my stories better).

The fear is real

The fear, that agonizing, gut wrenching sensation we all wish would leave us alone, is more real than any of us ever thought. For thousands of years the proverbial monster has existed not only in stories, poems, movies and other forms of literature, but in the subconscious mind of every person who has walked this earth. And these stories, just like any thought, had to be provoked by some real-life occurrence.
Believe me when I tell you, these monsters are real. They walk the same street... Continue reading ...

I was actually busy setting up this very website when I realized I had a lack of photos. And what would fit better with a horror writer’s website than a couple of ghost photos? Now although I have seen enough ghosts to know they exist, I wasn’t sure if I could get one on camera.
With a Kodak Easyshare camera and one of my friends in the passenger seat, I set off towards one of the largest and perhaps oldest graveyards in Bloemfontein, South Africa.
My friend showed a slight lack of ... Continue reading ...
